The answer is both. Art is both entertaining and educational. And That is why it is the most important application and expression of human which can be defined through various branches of activities. From the moment of birth babies are curious to explore the world around them. As they grow older they develop many more senses and naturally start observing. Exploring and imitating are the type of activities that the more children practice, the greater they become at operating ways to control things. Participating in Art activities such as; Drawing, Painting, crafting , etc,.. can be very effective on developing fine motor skills, critical thinking, math skills and language skills.
Children are very much aware of their surroundings and they are constantly learning and practicing ways to communicate and connect with the world they are exploring. They gather information, develop perceptions and perceive ways to take actions towards them.
Learning how to take control over art tools when creating an artwork benefits and speeds up the process of improving fine motor skills. It can be done through forming the clay between hands, using fingers or sculpting tools to generate details. Developing these skills will later help with writing, tying up shoe laces, zipping or buttoning coats and etc,..
Causes and effects are learned through making mistakes, repetitions and studying patterns. Things like pushing hard with the pencil and leaving a darker effect on the surface. or painting or colouring slowly to have more focus over staying in between the lines. These practices will help Children develop cognitive thinking and improving problem solving skills in them.
Learning and developing Math skills can be as easy and fun and simple as just drawing shapes, understanding the sizes, comparison, and counting them. These practices are very effective for appreciating the math foundation.
Presenting the artwork is just as important as any other part of it. Asking the child open ended questions and encouraging them to talk about their painting or drawing will give them the opportunity to learn new vocabulary words. Also, if they keep a constant practice they will develop a high level of skills for giving out speeches and gain self confidence for speaking out in public.
And don’t forget! As a teacher, a guardian or a caregiver you play a big roll helping the children develop these skills. If you leave them on their own, they will eventually, slowly lose interest in Art and give up on learning new tasks and skills to improve their behaviour. So show them that you are there for them as a great supporter, an awesome listener and a fantastic enthusiast!
